World Champion Speaker Darren LaCroix suggests if you want to be a professional speaker:
- Focus on the phone - become comfortable using the phone to make cold calls, informational interviews, follow-up calls, etc.
- See beyond the fee - think about ways to make money on your speech and speaking besides getting a speaking fee
- Beyond the bomb - if you bomb out onstage, work on ways to recover from it (e.g., refuse part or all of your fee, acknowledge the problem, etc.)
- Follow on the follow-up - when opportunities present themselves, or someone gives you an opportunity, follow-up to take full advantage of that opportunity
