If you are using a prop, keep the prop hidden until you need it . When you come to the place in your speech where you need it, reveal it and use it. After you no longer need it, hide it again. If your speech's point is symbolized in the prop, leave the prop out so people are continually reminded of your speech's point.
Notice how JJ Abrams uses the Kleenex box which plays only a small part in his speech and then puts it away when he is through with it:
