Time out

Fellow speaker,

Some timing tips:
  • Inform the audience if you need to change your presentation so that it is different from the meeting agenda: give just the fact that your presentation will be longer or shorter while not mentioning the circumstances that made you have to make this change
  • Keep a close eye on your time, benchmarking your time at key points in your speech, to make sure that you are where you should be in your speech when you reach those sections, and adjust your speech as necessary - bring a timing device or clock where you can easily see it so you are always aware of how much time you have left in your speech
  • If required, leave some question and answer time, after the question and answer is over, give the conclusion of your speech
  • Let people know you can talk to them after your speech is over, so they can get their questions answered even if you don't have time to answer them during your speech
  • Ask for more time if necessary or if the audience requests it and you are the only speaker on the program, allow those who want to leave to go, then continue with your presentation for an agreed-upon length
Timing,

Tim
