When you first start speaking, it's helpful to meet the audience at the level where they are at: if they are excited, you are excited; if they are quiet, you are quiet; etc. One way to test the audience's level of interest is to:
- Watch what happens to the person who speaks before you
- See what happens in the audience after someone reads off your speech introduction
- Feel out the audience as you go along
