- Create a setup line (a normal statement)
- List assumptions the audience will have about the set up line
- List alternative explanations to the setup line the audience won't expect
- Tighten up your setup line and shorten your alternative explanation to a short phrase or word
- Read the result and see if it seems funny to you
- Repeat steps 1-5
- Edit as needed
