World Champion Craig Valentine suggests you always tell stories with your speeches so that, even if the humor doesn't work for that audience, the audience will simply think that you meant to be serious. If one humorous line doesn't work, quickly move to the next humorous line to see if that works instead. Realize that something will work, you simply have to be aware of what does work, and work to build the greatest audience reaction out of the laughs you do get. You may want to have a "saver line" where you get a laugh by commenting on the lack of a laughter: Craig's is, "That one's just for me."
