Writer James Bannerman suggests when you are reading from a script or notes to look:
- Up at the audience at the beginning - this requires you have memorized the first part of your script or notes - looking up at the beginning connects to the audience when their attention is highest
- Down at your script/notes - look at your notes without speaking then look up and say what you read to your audience
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you get to the end of your speech (look down at your notes to read them and then talk to your audience)
- Up at the audience at the end - the last thing the audience sees is you looking directly at them and connecting with them
