The four audience types

Fellow speaker,

Professional presentation coach Phil Waknell suggests there are four types of attitudes your audience has to your speech idea (see graphic below):
  • Convinced/Solid and Positive/Supporters) - these people agree absolutely with you - they need to be motivated to convince others of your speech idea
  • Influenceable and Positive/Supporters - these people agree with much of what you have to say - they need to be reassured that they are doing the right thing in agreeing with you
  • Influenceable and Hostile/Opponents - these people disagree with most of what you say but is open to change - they need to be empathized with and then gradually steered over to your point of view
  • Convinced/Solid and Hostile/Opponents - these people absolutely disagree with you - they need to be sidelined and ignored so they don't disrupt the point you are making in your speech
