Professional speaker Judy Carter suggests a six step process to discussing your rate for giving a speech:
- What is your event? - get details about what the event is
- What results do you expect? - find out about their expectations for the outcome of your speech
- When will my speech begin? - gives you a sense of what will be happening right before and after your speech - which might affect whether or not you want to speak at all
- How much have you budgeted for speakers? - they may not want to answer this question - if they do answer it, it will give you an idea of whether this speech is worth it by itself - or if you have to get some more things from them to make it worth your while
- We are close to my fee, let's find some way to work this out - if what they offer is getting close to what you want, work with them to find other ways to make the project worth while. Maybe they could buy your book for everyone attending the event, maybe they could give you extra bookings at a later date, or something else could be done
- I need to think about this - I'll let you know tomorrow - take some extra time to think over the project and let them think it over as well - this will make sure both you and your potential client are comfortable with the deal you have arranged between you
