Beyond the prop

Fellow speaker,

Author Jeremy Donovan's in depth study of World Champion speakers suggests if you use props, to make the props symbolic of something.  For example, if your prop is a book, you could make referring to the book (prop) symbolic of learning as in, "One of the most important things you can do in your life is to learn [holding up book]."
