Story time

Fellow speaker,

Author Jeremy Donovan's in depth study of World Champion speakers suggests there are different ways to use time in a story:
  • Linear - also called "chronological" - events happen in the story in the same order they occurred in life
  • Independent - different stories are put together to tell one overall "story" that has a particular point to make - each story helps contribute to the point
  • Flashback - story is told in linear order until the story suddenly jumps back to a previous place in time, after that jump back is complete, the story jumps ahead and continues in linear order
  • Nonlinear (most challenging) - events of a story are split up so they occur different from the sequence in which they originally happened
