Set the scene

Fellow speaker,

World Champion Speaker Craig Valentine suggests you keep in mind three things when setting the scene for your story:
  • Keep it short - quickly set the scene so the audience can "see" the situation in their mind
  • Use everyday, conversational language - leave out any "poetics" and only include information that the audience needs to know to understand the story
  • Describe the story using some combination of visual, audio (hearing), kinesthetic (touch) or smell (VAKS) (e.g., "sitting in my garden smelling the flowers").
