Brian Caplovitz of SpeakerMatch suggests several ways to get non-cash compensation for free speeches:
- Get them to agree to invite you back for a paid engagement if they like you
- Get compensated for travel for you and a friend - if they pay for your travel, it costs very little extra to add another person to the bill - this turns your speech opportunity into a vacation opportunity as well, especially if you get some extra time after your speech obligations are ended (a few extra "free" days before your return flight)
- Get a professional photo shoot - get shots with 3/4 audience and 1/4 you speaking (this shows the both the audience's size and reaction to your speech)
