Professional speaker Ron Hoff suggests that rooms have personalities and the best way to handle the room is to know what type of a room it is before you arrive. For example, if you are speaking in a supper club, you may feel like a "lounge act," and if at a school you become the "teacher" and the audience the "students" (in addition to adults possibly being crammed into very uncomfortable chairs that are too small for them). Anticipate what the room problems may be, and show up early to manage them as best you can.
