Professional speaker Ron Hoff suggests you can prevent an audience from becoming hostile by quickly getting them to agree to a few things. Somewhere at the beginning of your speech get them to agree that you will keep the speech on time, while they both allow you to make your point and keep an open mind. Get them to agree by hand raise, nods, etc. but get definitely get them to agree to these conditions.
