To create audience interest in your story, withhold information either:
- From the audience - this creates a surprise for the audience
- From the character in your story - this creates a surprise for your character and suspense for the audience (since they know something the character doesn't)
An example of a surprise for the audience: tell a story about Lisa and then at the end reveal that Lisa is a dog. An example of a surprise for the character and suspense for the audience: the character in your story is going into a dark room that they think is empty but actually has a killer there waiting for them.
