Openers

Fellow speaker,

To get your audience's attention when you open your speech:
  1. Startling - give a startling statement (e.g., "Every day you are losing control of more and more of your life.")
  2. Storytelling - tell a personal story that is relevant to your audience
  3. Action - get your audience to do something (e.g., "Raise your hand if...")
  4. Thinking - get your audience thinking about your speech (e.g., "Imagine you are...")
  5. Pausing - pause before starting your speech
