When telling a story and you are giving the background of your characters, do it dialogue. For example, "Fred, we've known each other for 12 years now, and this is the first time you've asked my advice." "Bob, I know I'm a quiet guy and don't ask for help much, but this time I'm really in a jam and could use your advice."
