Getting the gestures right

Fellow speaker,

If you are using gestures in your speech, there are four areas to focus on to make your gestures effective:
  • Description - describe or show something
  • Emphasis - use to emphasize a point or idea
  • Suggest - suggest an emotion or idea (e.g., shrugging your shoulders)
  • Prompt - give an indication that some action is necessary (e.g., gesturing towards the audience to get them to respond to your question)
Gesturing,
