To ensure you are connecting with your audience, you can use what World Champion speaker Craig Valentine calls the "You/I ratio". Simply take the number of times you mention the audience or say "you" in your speech and then divide that by how many times you mention "I" words (I, me, my, etc.) in your speech. The result should be 1 or greater than 1. If the result is a lot less than 1, then you have too much "I/me/my" and not enough "you/your/yours" in your speech.
