Stories in a speech take place on two tracks: the track of the speaker's actual experience of the story and the track of the audience relating their experience to the speaker's story. These two tracks are parallel to each other for part of the speech and then at some point they converge, as the speaker gets to the universal point of their story that the audience can directly relate to.
